You can also re-start the cleaning process where you started when charging is required halfway through. You can also schedule multiple cleaning sessions within one day, if needed.

When we tested the IQ XL, it did well on hard floors, but was unable to handle carpets with medium piles with larger crumbs, and sometimes pushing debris into corners where it was not supposed to be. The robot's side brush can occasionally fail to catch dirt or flick it away. It also moves in a straight lines instead of zigzagging as more advanced robots.

You can create no-go zones on the map of the IQ XL app by drawing boundary rectangles. These boxes aren't easy to draw and adjust. We prefer virtual walls.

Another feature we loved on the IQ XL is the ability to choose an Ultra-Clean mode which increases the suction power of the robot and stretches its brushes across floors in the form of a crosshatch. This feature is particularly beneficial in areas that are heavily trafficked. We are dissatisfied that it's not available on the current models. You can set a timer which will automatically activate an Ultra-Clean cycle for any room within your home.

The Shark Matrix

Shark's ION series robot vacuums are a cut above the rest with their LIDAR mapping capabilities and self-emptying bases. However the Matrix takes things to the next level by offering 2-in-1 vacuuming and mopping.

The Matrix like all robotic vacuums, can be used to clean floors using a traditional upright, or equipped with a powered pad that can move the floor and scrub it to give it a more thorough clean. It can be used in both vacuum and mop modes, which utilize the same cleaning pad to both cleaning your floors and getting rid of any stubborn dirt or stains. The matrix's powerful cleaning mode is particularly effective on carpets, as it makes use of an array of grids to make multiple passes over the dirt and debris for 30% more effective stain removal compared to Roomba robot vacuums.

The Matrix also is much easier to use than a modern Roomba. Shark's app allows you to create a spot-cleaning area by draggin a rectangle into the designated tab. Roomba users must manually identify and designate the cleaning zone. Plus the Matrix has an actual power button should you'd like to start cleaning without opening the app.

Other quality-of-life features are also included with the Matrix that include three suction power modes (normal Eco and high-power "Max") and a recharge/resume feature that lets it pick up where it left off when it has to return to its dock. Its battery life was slightly higher than the AI Ultra's, and its overall performance at removing debris from a variety of surfaces was excellent.

The only disadvantages of the Matrix is that it uses up its battery more quickly than other models, and that its cleaning of pet hair is a bit inconsistent. Still, this is an excellent choice for the majority of households, and the Matrix improves on the AI Ultra in several key ways. It feels much better constructed, recharges faster, and offers better debris removal on low-pile carpeting. Plus, its 'Eco' and 'Max' modes are a great step up from the AI Ultra's Normal mode.
